The Chris Isaak Show, a review of the American Showtime series

Chris Isaak Show: American Boy Gathers Friends

In 2026, the heartthrob and romantic Chris Isaak turns 70 years old. It’s worth remembering his cinematic achievements just once. In the early 90s, Chris became a superstar thanks to a single melancholic ballad Wicked Game, enhanced by Herb Ritz’s Hawaiian music video. Isaak’s cameos are present in such cult films as Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, The Silence of the Lambs, and the TV series Friends. The Chris Isaak Show (2001-2004) is dedicated to the behind-the-scenes life of the real musical group Silvertone, so cameos of friends are often integrated into the plot as part of the show business industry or Chris’ personal environment.

47 episodes have been released in this situation comedy for 3 seasons. In the series, Isaak and his musicians are portrayed as ordinary people with ordinary problems. The series was filmed for the Showtime channel, already known to us from Rebel Highway, from March 12, 2001 to March 25, 2004 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a city that pretends to be San Francisco, where the plot of the series takes place. During the series, a new album, Always Got Tonight (2002), was released, containing the title song of the American Boy series, however, the most popular song from there was the ballad Life Will Go On.

Chris Isaak – American Boy

Chris Isaak plays himself in the title role. With him, his loyal band is also in the role of themselves: Kenny Dale Johnson, the drummer who keeps trying to steal the show; bassist Rowland Salley; guitarist Hershel Yatovitz. And also Dorothy Isaak, Chris’s mom, who appeared in several episodes.

Besides them, a whole scattering of country and rock stars appear in the frame: Johnny Reno, Junior Brown, Shelby Lynn, Allison Moorer, Blake Shelton, Tricia Earwood, Dweezil Zappa, Cyndi Lauper, Billie Joe Armstrong, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh, Paul Stanley (the last three are from those bands that can be tolerated Johnny Cash couldn‘t) and others. There are also many beautiful women here, such as Kristin Dattilo as Chris’ manager. There are also plenty of invited movie stars: Bai Ling (who was Chris’ girlfriend at the time), Minnie Driver, Wes Craven, John Polito, Robert Culp.

“The Chris Isaak Show” is reminiscent of the HBO series “The Larry Sanders Show” (1992-1998), where celebrities played exaggerated versions of themselves, which anticipated such series as “Studio 30” and the recent “Studio” by Seth Rogen.

The show begins with a love scene between Chris and a certain Monica, during which she spits on him, which causes his bewilderment. Then Chris Isaak talks to a naked girl who was supposed to be his subconscious or his therapist, combining this with her main job, during which she pretended to be a mermaid in a bar. We remember how Chris sexually harassed Cameron Diaz live at the MTV Music Awards, and here he will have to solve a lot of problems with women.

Chris Isaak is a very underrated artist. All fans of his music point out that he can also be quite funny. And people who have attended his concerts consider them to be among the best in their lives. And maybe future generations will find out about this series and ask: “Wait, did the guy who sang Wicked Game have his own TV show?”
