The Dragstrip Girl (1994): A grisly romance

Starting the Rebel Highway project, producer Lou Arkoff wondered: “What if Rebel Without Cause was filmed today? He would definitely be darker, sexier and more dangerous.” So the movie Dragstrip Girl (Dragstrip Girl, 1994) is probably the sexiest of all the series. The director of the film, Mary Lambert, was previously famous for her film adaptations of the Pet Cemetery and works on horror films.

I noticed a coincidence with Wild Days (1991) by Wong Kar Wai. Despite his scripted mex, the greaser Johnny Ramirez is very Asian and looks like a Kara-Vaevsky Yuddy (actor Leslie Chung). Johnny’s character, like the hero of Days Of Being Wild, shares a living space with an aunt engaged in prostitution (here it’s Tracy Lords) and he has a “slightly retarded” younger brother or friend.

Ken Mark Dacascos‘ slightly doll-like beauty doesn’t make him any less manly. Subsequently, he established himself as a cool guy from the militants, but here he does a great romantic hero. This is probably the most romantic Rebel Highway episode I’ve seen so far.

Johnny shows a beautiful toned figure. Actor Dacascos is generally always in good physical shape, he was seriously engaged in martial arts and is a master of martial arts. His ethnic identity deserves special mention: On his father’s side, he has Filipino, Spanish and Chinese roots; on his mother’s side, Irish and Japanese. We must pay tribute to Mark, he is really a great actor and makes half a film.

Pretty Laura, played by Natasha Gregson Wagner, is also very good (by the way, she played a small role in Lynch’s Highway to Nowhere) and, of course, participates in a support group. Like the heroine of the Escape from Prison, she is also bored with the measured life of an American town and the position of a wealthy daddy’s daughter from high society, where she does not need anything. Natasha Gregson Wagner’s mother Natalie Wood is an actress of the golden age of Hollywood.

Laura has a crush on Johnny, and Johnny is actually a kind guy who only wants to appear bad in order to impress a girl who completely blew his mind. For Laura’s sake, he is even ready to go against his friends. He is by no means an evil bad guy, his criminality is only that he is a cunning thief with hot blood. The owner of the auto repair shop, Raul, is colorful and infernal. Johnny’s brazen sidekick Dougie (Raymond Cruz) is also in place.

In the soundtrack to the film, as in other Rebel Highway series, there are songs by Ricky Nelson, Fats Domino, and the Stampede instrumental has already been somewhere. The Dragstrip Girl was filmed in Los Angeles, according to the plot there are Latino makeup artists here, so there are Los Lobos here. The music of Joey Altruda could not be found, if anyone has these compositions, write in the comments.

There is sex and car racing and the police (rather sluggish). And of course, the finale here will not be without tragedy. Which, by the way, everyone will take quite calmly. It was clear from the very beginning that this story would not end very well. However, the ending is not entirely obvious.
