Deadwood (2019) – in the Wild West without change

Being a fan of this series, I decided to watch the new feature film Deadwood 2019 (Deadwood The Movie). This is not a spin-off, but rather a logical continuation (or completion?) the events of ten years ago. George Ambrose Hirst became a junior senator in California, showed up in our hero city again and immediately made a lot of unpleasant suggestions to everyone and caused a lot of bad memories. I raised a huge layer of silt from the bottom of this river of memory, if of course it can be called silt.

George Ambrose Hirst, Deadwood 2019
Hirst is still that nit, you can’t say otherwise, and even then it will be quite soft. Scum is still a good word.

This bloodthirsty murderer, a natural scoundrel and a pathological liar, sometimes makes an offended grimace – oh, they slander him, oh, they offend him! – when opponents try to expose him.

In almost every scene with him, you just want to put a lot of bullets in him. So that someone (read, Marshal) would take on his soul this rather forgivable sin and shoot the scoundrel like a dog. However, U.S. Marshall is playing near-noble knights. When Seth Bullock is poked about the enforcement of the law, he says that he is not obliged to comply with it, he interprets it in his own way.

Timothy Olyphant, Seth Bullock, Deadwood, film 2019
A visit to Deadwood is better to start with a visit to the marshal’s office, it will be at least a show of respect.

In general, you watch this movie a few years after the series, and it’s like you’ve returned to your old home, loved and slightly hated. Here is Al Swearengen, the owner of the Pearl. The aged villain is no longer the same, he is sick and sentimental. Here’s Chinese Wu, who calls Al “Swedgen.” Oddly enough, Al always understood the Chinese, although he had two words in the English lexicon: “Swedgen” and “cocksucker”. The business partner has a friendly sympathy for Swedgen, because Al is on an equal footing with him, and Wu takes care of him.

Charlie Attore, Deadwood the Movie, 2019
– Making such a judgment is hardly in your competence, sir!..
– Nevertheless, I just fucking took it out.

The beloved landowner Charlie Attor signed his own sentence, culturally sending Hirst away. And the poor Jane Canary gives her acting to this plot something Shakespearean. English tragic pathos in the American Wild West. Despite the fact that it never dries out, it is vigilant at the right moment. The style of a drunken master, not otherwise.

Trixie, Sol, Caroline, Deadwood 2019
Whores are like saints here. Trixie is naturally like a Madonna and child. Quite a lot of biblical allusions. “And the lamb shall lie down with the wolf…”

The people wanted to lynch the senator, and Marshall Bullock was doubtful whether he should stop the massacre. But his very correct wife turned away and took the children away so that they would not look at this cruelty, then the marshal woke up and dispersed the crowd. Saul (the Nixter of the Racers) looks like shit right now. But Timothy Olyphant is doing well, he has grown a longer lush mustache.

For some reason, the Russian dubbing track has jambs. At some points, a piano, a crying baby, a song about Matilda, etc. are cut out. It’s better to watch with the original voice acting and subs.

Jane Canary, Deadwood, 2019
Martha Jane Canary is a real-life character in the history of Deadwood, South Dakota, as well as Charlie Utter and Wild West legend Wild Bill Hickok

From the TV series Deadwood (2004) I once had such an impression: that there is a simple evil that is possibly necessary. It does not hide its bad nature. He was represented by Al Sveregen. Yes, he is a criminal and a murderer, but he is honest in his atrocities. And there is another evil – the meanest and meanest, which pretends to be good and never confesses its rotten essence. It seeks to create hell and chaos here and now. George Hirst was such an evil. Compared to him, Al and his ilk looked like harmless country grandfathers.

The film Deadwood 2019 pulls in a four. There’s too much sentiment, especially at the end, which is a bit disgusting. It’s even more disgusting that this creature was left alive. So watch first of all for fans of the series. But the song in the credits is a plus, a good Americana with violins, sung though unprofessionally, but with a soul.
