Peggy Sue Got Married, movie review

Peggy Sue Got Married (1986): Boyfriend from the Past

Despite the fact that I am familiar with many movie hits of the 80s, the film Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) undeservedly passed me by. Peggy Sue remains one of such underestimated pictures, the popularity of which even excellent actors and a famous director could not help. Kathleen Turner at the age of 32 was at the peak of popularity, everyone saw the romance with the stone then. The aspiring 22-year-old actor Nicholas only recently changed his uncle’s surname Coppola to Cage.

The chemistry of these two turned out only thanks to their acting efforts, Kathleen really didn’t like how the partner approached his role, he was too much for her. Indeed, Nicholas decided to make his Charlie Bodell an overly eccentric, talking voice character from cartoons. Cage with this highlighted cook and his characteristic nose sometimes looks like a crazy duckling. There is a place for his musicality: the guy sings one of Dion‘s main du-vop in the company of Jim Carrey and other youngsters.

Francis Ford did not develop the story arcs with the Beatles’ She Loves You and with the inventions of tights, focusing on the difficult choice for Peggy Sue – whether she should marry Charlie again, knowing that after 25 years they would break up and it would break her heart. Is fate pressing down on us or do we have freedom? Are we ready, remembering the choice we made once and how well everything started, to go through it again, despite the possibly bad outcome for ourselves? For what or for whom?

The name Peggy Sue was made a household name by Buddy Holly, the genius of rock and roll, who flew to Heavenly Vegas forever at the age of 22. Peggy Sue Got Married, despite the fact that it’s about time travel and about the good old America of the 60s, did not become a hit movie, unlike the one released a year earlier Back to the Future: Coppola’s is more of an author’s cozy movie, not a blockbuster.

The film is about appreciating the moments spent with loved ones. Peggy Sue is on the phone with her grandmother, knowing that she will soon be dead. How would you behave in this situation? Surely you would have burst into tears at the very thought that you could hear her voice again as in childhood. Seeing her younger sister, who will also be gone in the future, Peggy exclaims, “Let’s spend more time together!”. The sister is played by 14-year-old Sofia Coppola, who has now made films such as Translation Difficulties, Somewhere, The Last Straw, Priscilla.

Peggy Sue has a wary attitude towards her future ex-husband. She knows how it will end, regrets that fate did not give her another chance when she got pregnant in high school and everything turned out to be a foregone conclusion for her. But here she has the freedom of choice – what if she starts dating another guy she liked? After all, she hadn’t dared to make the first move before. Will he become her destiny? Or will she be able to love Charlie again? The finale seems to be predictable, but the most obvious thing here is presented quite unexpectedly and touchingly.
