I present to you the first film for which I translated subtitles into Russian, and it is perhaps the best among them so far: Greased Lightning 1977. The film is based on the biography of Wendell Scott, the first black NASCAR champion. I won’t bother listing the actors and others involved. Even if someone knows them, this case was 40 years ago and they are not one of those legends whose names are well-known. Although fans of a certain genre probably know Pam Grier… In general, I can only say that everything worked well. This is by far the best NASCAR movie I’ve seen. Much better than the dreary Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise.
The biography of Comrade Scott himself, full of interesting details, contributed a lot to this. He’s riding a bike at the beginning of the movie, and this moment is important at least because Wendell was the only black kid who actually had a bike. Also, the future racer, before becoming a taxi driver, really went through the Second World War. As a result, many white racers considered it an honor to become friends with a veteran, and some even took on the role of bodyguards. And in addition to the details from Wendell’s life, the film shows a lot of interesting things about the history of the United States as a whole: how the auto industry developed and changed between the 1930s and 1970s, and how public opinion changed, and all this is shown on the screen in such a way that it looks in one go. As a bonus, you can admire the moonshining culture a little. The fact that Wendell was also a bootlegger is almost unsurprising to me. In general, it begins to seem to me that in those days in America it was possible to imprison every second racer for this case.
It’s really difficult for me to tell anything, because I really liked the movie, and I liked it very much, and therefore at some point emotions overshadowed my mind, and as a result, everything related to this film was perceived extremely subjectively. It’s not the best movie in the world, no, but it hit all my critical points, so I can’t say anything meaningful about it, and I certainly won’t criticize it. In general, I personally think that this movie should definitely be seen by all car lovers, and therefore, instead of further words, I just suggest watching the movie. Since it can be quite difficult to search the Internet for old American movies without translation, we decided not to waste your time and find it for you, and all you have to do is click on play. Enjoy your viewing.
