Girl Over Planet (2020) – in search of cosmic oceans

So, so, today we have “Thank you Yura, space is ours!”, April 12 is International Cosmonautics Day. And by the way, there will be a new release from the new Girl Over Planet team – In Search of Cosmic Oceans (2020). Fun melodic surf rock from a Russian band from Yekaterinburg in search of cosmic oceans. A girl from orbit is watching the planet. But her only connection to Earth is our surf quartet.

On the Altered State Of Reverb label, they compare them to Los Straitjackets, but I don’t think it’s worth making comparisons. GOP are mature musicians who have been playing such music for more than 20 years: members of the surf band Spoilers (how could you think of naming a band so that it would be impossible to find it on the Internet?), Trouble In Shoes, Country Pills and other musical groups.

The album begins briskly – Space Snowplow, a Space Snowplow, will restore order in icy space. The lyrical theme Tangerine Bay demonstrates the outstanding composing talent of the musicians, the guys can produce good catchy melodies.

The relaxing instrumental is followed by the western theme of Most People Call Me… Jim!. The whistling of bullets, the speed of the chase, the renegade hero leaves a town with a single saloon behind him, the gallows looms ghostly in front. Dancing Rockin’ Pants – the most bouncy rockin’ Pants. The organ is good, and somewhere behind you you can even hear a baritone guitar.

The life-affirming Let’s Go Grasshoppin’ invites you to plunge into the carefree times of warm summer. A straight rocker rhythm with complex harmonies. The Tetramino Twang instrumental (Tetris Theme) is actually the Peddlers, which was previously recorded for the Russian Camp Surf Wave compilation. Russian folk and dance music. “Don’t leave me, don’t leave me, don’t leave me… Oh, the box is full!” The world-famous game is the creation of Soviet engineer Alexei Pajitnov. One version of Tetris was released with Kremlin domes.

The album is very well recorded. This surf is cozy like the cabin of a good old spaceship and cheerful like the third space speed. The sound is very dense and at the same time soft and pleasant. The only downside is that the album is short. There are 6 songs in total, each about 3 minutes long. It’s definitely not an EP anymore, but it’s also hard to call it a full-fledged album. Although it definitely took place as a digital release. They’ll listen to him and never get bored. Great debut!
