The latest release of 2021 is Harpabilly Harp’n’roll! Our compatriot Maxim Evseev is hiding under the pseudonym Rolling Camel. Maxim has been playing the harmonica for 10 years and focuses on blues musicians such as Rod Piazza, William Clarke, James Cotton, Little Walter, Charlie Musselwhite. The EP is just a delight to the ears, all the instruments are in the right place, the album sounds authentic and melodic!
Maxim is from Siberia and has been living in the Krasnodar Territory since 2015. Besides him, they took part in the recording of the album: Sergey Efimenko (guitar), Alexey Stadnik (double bass), Vitaly Ogurtsov (drums). The material was recorded at the KING SIZE PRODUCTION studio (Krasnodar). It’s your turn to check it out!
From the very first bars, from the first ripples of the Harp Tonic harmonica, you are head over heels into a hot jive. Honestly, you wouldn’t even expect to hear such a virtuoso Harper. And that’s why everything is even more gratifying. Accompanied by a classic rockabilly trio. Shouts of c’mon, yeah add a separate courage.
Funny Rag is a compelling rockabilly ragtime. The guitar and the accordion have a dialogue with each other. Learn how to play! The narrative rockabilly-country shuffle About My Doggy opens with Merle Travis-style overdubs. Authentic guitar solo! And here are the short sighs of the harmonica “ugh”. These are jazzmen playing country music. Or the country people are playing jazz. And what breed is your dog?
Hop And Jump starts with a classic guitar riff, and you start humming “well I got a girl with a record machine.” They’re all damn good. The gang plays smoothly and gives an excellent groove. And harp is a real pleasure. Yes, the album is over. And it leaves you feeling understated and hungry for music. I’d like to hear more.
Verdict: cool musicians have recorded a driving mini-album at the level of world rock and roll stars. Harp is usually associated with the blues, but we hear that it is absolutely appropriate in rockabilly as a leading instrument. The remark “now prove that you are not a camel” now takes on the opposite meaning. Proving that you are a camel is a matter of honor and musical dignity.

Damn, this is really really cool! I listened to this EP and Lee Rocker’s album today, and – absolutely honestly and without false flattery – I liked the four tracks of Rolling Camel much more than most of the Gather Round! Which surprised me, because for me, instrumentals are usually one step below any track with words.
But these four are just something. A blues harmony sound on top of a classic rockabilly trio – boom, bomb. It’s a very rare combination, and the first thing that comes to mind after listening is: why? Why is it so rare to hear an accordion with a contrabass backing beat?
I feel like if there were vocals, I’d be shaking with ecstasy. Very cool.
