New TV series Enterprise “God’s Gift” (or Enterprise “Eternal Grace”) Perpetual Grace Ltd., (2019) from MGM and Epix companies was shot in a tragicomic genre. The action takes place nowadays in the USA, in the state of New Mexico, near the border. As we can guess, there is no way to do without blood and cruelty. After all, this is a very wild region, the American-Mexican south.
The main character James is going through a devastating personal crisis motivated by guilt over the death of a firefighter colleague with many children. And so he, the “lost young man,” gets involved in a very bad adventure, formally for the sake of money, but money doesn’t really interest him very much. He decides “come what may” and allows himself to go with the flow.
“Pa” Byron and “Ma” Lillian treat him like a family, “they picked him up and warmed him up,” they give him shelter, food and money. And James does exactly the opposite to them.: “robbed-warmed up” – deceives and throws. But Pa is far from that simple. Ben Kingsley is also a master of subtle psychological games, he likes to play characters who hide something or pretend not to be who they are, let’s recall “Death and the Girl”, where he shied away to the last. There are no services or sermons in his church here, and he and Ma don’t pray to Jesus day and night long. Pa, with his practical psychology, is rather a mentor for those who have turned onto a crooked path.
All the characters have their skeletons in the closet, and when they come out, the real dance of death begins. Cruelty and trials in situations that are on the verge of absurdity. I just want to exclaim, “Come on!? Is he an idiot?” or say, “you’re all crazy here.” But everything that is happening looks quite plausible. That’s how things sometimes happen in life-it’s ridiculous and unnecessary.
The actors migrated from very good TV shows. Texas Ranger Walker, the natural John Locke from “Lost.” And the main character is a klutz character from House of Cards, where he was also a muddy type, insinuated himself into the confidence of one girl and it didn’t do any good. The real Paul Allen Brown is Dewey Crowe from “Justice” and the bluish guy from “Mercenary Quarry”, he just has the type to play strange villains.
A red line runs through the series of everyday philosophy about postponing things for tomorrow – one argues that he uses this to deceive people, the other wants to start life from scratch tomorrow. But what happened to Uncle Dave, these are stupid circumstances. I believe him. And there is also black humor, sometimes on the verge of absurdity. One bad act leads to another, cause-and-effect relationships accumulate and sooner or later the situation will get out of control of its creators.
Hitting a child over the head with a bat for $60 or putting old people in jail for $2 million? – it is still unknown which is worse and more immoral.
“One day I dreamed of leaving this land where we live in fear as hostages of luck. Where nothing is guaranteed to us, nothing – neither love, nor security, nor peace. The only guarantee is that our lives will end.”
The opening title song (or the Main Theme of Perpetual Grace Ltd.) Here is this cheerful Americana:
The Jones Girls – Comet
The series began airing on June 2, 2019, with 10 episodes, meaning it will be available to watch in full in early August. I think it’s worth your time.
What time is the whole thing happening? Nowadays?
Yes, nowadays. Modern “O times, O mores!”
To be honest, by episode 8, I was tired of this series. Maybe it’s a matter of tightness, the same characters chew on past plots at the beginning of each episode. Yes, I remember what it’s about! And if I don’t remember, I’ll remember or review it. Or maybe it’s because I have too long a break between episodes. But Dad’s Father’s Day monologue is great!
Eh. Watch movies rather than TV shows. For me, every series is terribly chewing gum – just the fact that the very concept of a filler series exists as such is already one huge disadvantage for most series. Because try to find a series without fillers.
