Patsy & Loretta (2019): An ode to the female friendship of country legends

Patsy and Loretta (2019) is a biopic about the friendship of two women, country singers Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. The film was shot for the Lifetime TV channel by director Callie Khouri, who at one time won an Oscar for her script of Thelma and Louise, shot the TV series Nashville in the 2010s and is generally married to sound producer T-Bone Burnett – in general, she undoubtedly understands country music and female friendship. The film stars Megan Hilty (Patsy) and Jesse Mueller (Loretta). Previously, they both participated in Broadway musicals: Jessie played Carole King in Beautiful, and Hilty sang in Noises Off, and also played in the TV series Smash (2012-2013).

The action begins in 1957, both heroines are busy with their own affairs and family relationships. Their paths cross in 1961: Kline gets into an accident and in the hospital hears her song being sung by aspiring singer Lynn. They get into mutual sympathy and help each other. Patsy takes Loretta under her wing and teaches her how to achieve her goals in a relationship with her husband, preserving her dignity, as well as survival in show business. Women share their most intimate things with each other and become truly close people. The friendship continues despite Patsy’s tragic death at the age of 30.

There are relationships with children, fights with husbands, parties, heart-to-heart conversations with tears, but it’s also a success story about what a hard price it comes at. The heroines have to make choices, and they are not always in favor of children and family. Patsy’s daughter accompanies her mother to the last concert with tears.

In another good movie, Wild Rose, the heroine, aspiring to become a country star, makes a choice that really makes her heart ache. Johnny Cash had four daughters from his first marriage, and they recalled that their father was constantly absent: he took a frustratingly small part in their upbringing and was often absent from the main events of their youth – in fact, he was married to music.

Considering that Jessica Lange had already portrayed Patsy Cline on the big screen in Sweet Dreams (1985), and Sissy Spacek played Loretta Lynn in The Miner’s Daughter (1980), it was a serious and frightening challenge for Megan and Jesse to participate in the film. But they handled it very well. Janine Turner plays Hilda Hanson, and the husbands are Kyle Schmid (Charlie Dick) and Joe Tippett (Doo “Mooney” Lynn), without their participation the film would not have turned out so interesting.

The consulting producers of the TV movie were the daughters of country stars Julie Fudge and Patsy Lynn Russell. Megan Hilty noted that Julie was very kind and provided great support. To work on her role, Megan visited the Patsy Cline Museum in Nashville and got acquainted with her personal belongings, such as letters: “Patsy was so funny and self-critical, with her inherent southern charm. And also ironic, she wrote so often Ha!”. And instead of treating Loretta as a rival, Patsy reveals to her the secrets of how to be a successful country star. And of course, she knew that she was “the one and only Patsy Kline!”
