Highway to Hell (Highway To Hell or Greetings from the Highway To Hell, 1991) is an adventure movie with elements of horror and comedy from director Eita de Jong. Despite some trash and the status of a B-grade film, some scenes are pleasantly surprising. It should be noted the excellent work of make-up artists, costume designers and a good performance of the actors. The plot is of course classic, it is based on the Greek tragedy Orpheus and Eurydice. True, there is no opera in the film, and the most famous AC/DC song also does not sound. The music was written by the band Hidden Faces, quite a common soundtrack for such films.
Brian Helgeland received $275,000 for his script, having previously shot the film 976-EVIL with Robert Englund and wrote the script for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4.
Pizza delivery man Charlie Sykes (Chad Lowe) and his fiancee Rachel (Christine Swansen “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) secretly go to Las Vegas to get married there. Charlie chooses an abandoned road where a hellish policeman is on duty, who kidnaps Rachel. Charlie will have to make a trip to Hell to get his beloved back.
Grandfather from “Last Chance” equips the main character on a hell of a trip and instead of a 1978 pizza Ford Pinto gives the kid his 1940 Ford V8 De Luxe with a secret, and also a sawn-off shotgun, and cartridges into the bargain.
On the territory of Hell, someone Beezle (does the name remind you of anything?) from time to time he helps the hero (charismatic Patrick Bergin). I didn’t like the boy Adam, despite the fact that he is Lennon. All the fuss with this guy just for the sake of playing a race with the devil hell cop. Well, the road to the Infernal City was flooded with cars from the 70s: VW Beetle and VW Baja Bug in the amount of at least a hundred (that’s where the whole budget went!). Hellkop drives a 1979 Ford LTD, the character is cool and convincing, he seems invincible, but he also has a vulnerable spot.
Caricatured, the Bikeriders are kind of for the entourage and to hinder Charlie in his noble mission. The witch is really unpleasant, that’s the true image of lust! Also in Highway To Hell there is a cameo of metal woman Lita Ford, a cameo role of Ben Stiller, however, there is a whole family of Stiller Fakers here.
The image of Hell is very curious, there is Purgatory, and there is Hell City. Those who are not suitable for the infernal city are sent to a giant meat grinder. The dog Cerberus, filmed in stop motion, turned out to be unusual.
The film is certainly not scary, and not particularly funny, but the characters are at least funny and original. The budget by today’s standards is negligible, only $ 9 million. “Highway To Hell” failed miserably at the box office, collecting only $ 26 thousand and apparently immediately went to videotapes, becoming quite an interesting specimen there. So for the beginning of the 90s, the film is quite good. The moral of the film: no need to a) sleep at the wheel b) marry a virgin. Well, in the sense that sex needs to be arranged before the wedding, otherwise the devil will take the girl to himself.
