Ghost Radio, Something Better For You 2022, album review

Ghost Radio – Something Better For You: Ashes, Ashes and Something Better

There are ghosts with a motor, and ghosts with affectionate names settle in the old radio. Verunchik walks along the streets, squeezed by gloomy Chelyabinsk high-rise buildings, and even the winds part before her. The ephemerally dashing ghoul Nikitka teases the surrounding cats with an ephemerally dashing saxophone. Vitka the ghoul hums on the double bass to the beat of the industrial noise of the outskirts. Werewolf Ivan howls at the moon with an electric guitar. Only the humble Kostya, known among the cemetery as Bones, comfortably rattles his drums, imitating crickets. When these five gather for the sabbath, the air sparkles and it gets unusually hot. When these five release a new album, they start streaming myrrh. “Something Better For You,” they declare defiantly. We should figure out how much better it is!

The Time Is Running is as disturbing as Time itself. Nikita growls ominously, Vera slyly explains the transience of the processes, the rhythm section gives out a rumba in the key of Aragon and Castile, sudden castanets emphasize the Andalusian music. Everything is fine here, although the drum part could be enriched in a swing manner.

Something Better For You manages to be innovative without deviating from the canons. A Johnny Johnson-inspired stride piano adds spice and bubbles. Intoxicatingly delicious.

The amateurish bacchanalia of That Rockabilly Blues is slightly brightened up by the saxophone, but the conversational vocals and guitar solo, which even the housekeeper can play, are pulling down like weights. Let’s leave it on the conscience of the authors.

You Make Me So Wild is charming, like lilac flowers in the light of lanterns. The tender ballads of Gene Vincent and Brenda Lee come back to mind. The author of the article invited the cat to dance.

Ghost Radio, Vera sings

One can only guess what the abbreviation F. F. F. means, but this instrumental dances on the field of early cycobilly. On the same field, skeletons painted by Disney are dancing to the beat. A slight feeling of understatement in the guitar.

The Chelyabinsk version of the American folk Sam Hall would have been a good help to Benny Hill if he had been reporting from death row.

Ghost Radio: Victor is at the microphone

In Drinkin’ Tea, Luther Perkins’ guitar style stumbles over Robert Zimmerman’s vocal style. It’s a good attempt, but sometimes you should drink something stronger than tea.

Don’t Leave Me Alone is simply magical. The quiet cry of a stray cat with the soul of Billie Holiday. The main hit on ghost radio.

My Favorite Song is distinctly reminiscent of “Tainted Love”, but it is not without its own charm.

It is unknown how many hands the shaman has, but in the final Hurry Up, the shaman Vitya managed to play the harp, harmonica and double bass at the same time. It is also unknown what the shaman Vera was doing at that time.

Ghost Radio: Kostya behind the drums

Concluding the review, I would especially like to note the quintet’s healthy desire for experimentation. And even if the album didn’t come out quite smooth, the fluffiness prevails over the clawiness, and the spirits, ghosts and other undead are joyfully swaying. Taking into account all the experience of their own recordings, Ghost Radio has all the potential to create a truly great record. What we wish them and us! The shroud of night is already rustling, Moon Dogs!
