Dave Phillips & The Hot Rod Gang (2021): The Return of the Rockabilly veteran

The icon of the 80s neo-rockabilly, Dave Phillips, formerly of the Blue Cats, who named his rockabilly band after the 1958 film starring Gene Vincent, is returning. Famous for his collaboration with Mark Harman from Restless and the debut album Wild Youth with the rockabilly version of Tainted Love by Gloria Jones! This is Dave’s first release in the last 20 years and immediately on vinyl! The 7-inch single was released on the German label KEiL-Records, these are two cool tracks for hot parties, both written by Phillips himself. To his music, you immediately want to snap your fingers, clap, stamp and dance!

The single is released on sky blue vinyl in a limited edition of 444 copies. Also included in this very special gift edition are pleasant bonuses, the possession of which will make any collector’s heart beat faster! So, two brand new songs “I Lost My Beer!” and “I’m Gonna Toss My Cookies” is a wonderful rockabilly swing. Dave Phillips & The Hot Rod Gang is back on vinyl and on your good old turntables.

I Lost My Beer! inherits the mood of the beloved classic Hey Bartender and Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee. “…Two more beers, there’s a party going on over here!” I’m Gonna Toss My Cookies – a little story about how cookies won’t stay inside for long.

Dave Phillips, Wild Youth, 1982, album cover

This release format is a reminder that almost 40 years ago in 1982, the 7″ single by Dave Phillips And The Hot Rod Gang – Tainted Love/Wild Youth was released on Rockhouse UK. In the 80s, Dave and his bandmates, including the Blue Cats, Deltas, Restless, Polecats, and Stargazers, proved to their peers that there was an alternative to commercial electronic pop, thereby preparing the Rockabilly Revival and the ground for the American Stray Cats invasion.

At the age of 12, Dave, who was learning to play the trumpet, noticed a lone double bass at a music school, and that day, when he started playing it, he got so carried away that he forgot about everything. Since then, his life has been devoted to rock and roll. It is a mistake to believe that Dave, who had not released fresh material for a couple of decades, was out of business in 2000 – he is a regular participant in rockabilly festivals, including Viva Las Vegas, Rockin’ Race Jamboree and others. In one of the last concerts recorded on video, he and the Hot Rod Gang perfectly perform numbers from the legacy of Gene Vincent (Pretty Baby, Race With Devil, Catman) and Buddy Holly (Raining In My Heart), as well as traditional folk themes like Man Of Constant Sorrow. Well, new material has arrived, including I Lost My Beer.

Dave is a follower of the classic rockabilly tradition of the 50s, much loved by Gene Vincent. The veteran is still young and full of energy, his voice is cheerful, and his fingers are deft and skillful. I hope that the single will be followed by a full album.
